Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-fronted Hummingbird (Amazilia viridifrons), with which formerly considered conspecific. Species name sometimes given as verticalis, but this name refers to Azure-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanocephala).
Proposed subspecies conjuncta, of Sonora, indistinguishable from ellioti. "Cyanomyia salvini", from Nacosari (Sonora), reported to be of hybrid origin with Broad-billed Hummingbird (Cynanthus latirostris), but is probably an aberrant individual of subspecies ellioti.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- ellioti (von Berlepsch, 1889) - Extreme south-western USA to north-western and central Mexico.
- violiceps (Gould, 1859) - South-western Mexico.
