Subspecies
Molecular-genetic analyses suggest possible close relationship with Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii ), Short-billed Pipit (Anthus furcatus ) and Hellmayr's Pipit (Anthus hellmayri ) and all may belong to a clade that also includes Yellowish Pipit (Anthus lutescens ), Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera ), South Georgia Pipit (Anthus antarcticus ).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
meridae Zimmer, JT, 1953 - Andes in north-western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida, northern Táchira).
bogotensis Sclater, 1855 - North-western Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá, in southern Táchira) and Andes from Colombia (northern and southern parts of central range, also eastern range south to Cundinamarca) south to northern Peru (Cajamarca).
immaculatus Cory, 1916 - North-central Peru south to Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
shiptoni (Chubb, C, 1923) - North-western Argentina (Tucumán).
