Geographical variation relatively insignificant. Several subspecies described, including kashmirica (eastern Kashmir), flavescens (western Nan Shan, Gansu), holdereri (Gansu, later interpreted as south-western Tibetan Plateau north-east to eastern Qinghai and Gansu) and subgrisea (north-eastern Qinghai), but considered insufficiently distinct to merit recognition.
