Subspecies
No subspecies.

Plumage similarities and biogeography have suggested to some authors that sister-species is Dusky-tailed Canastero (Pseudasthenes humicola). However, voice, tail structure, nest structure, foraging behaviour and habitat, indicate that it may be more closely related to the group, possibly a superspecies, formed by Creamy-breasted Canastero (Asthenes dorbignyi) and Berlepsch's Canastero (Asthenes berlepschi) and also including probably Chestnut Canastero (Pseudasthenes steinbachi) and Short-billed Canastero (Asthenes baeri). In some aspects of plumage, tail structure, behaviour, voice and nest structure, all of these are more similar to Phacellodomus (especially Streak-fronted Thornbird (Phacellodomus striaticeps)) and possibly better placed in that genus.
