Subspecies
Plumage pattern and biogeography suggest that most likely sister-species is Crested Hornero (Furnarius cristatus). Subspecies albogularis previously known as badius, but that taxon was described within genus Turdus, in which the name was preoccupied. Significant variation in body size follows Bergmann's Rule, with largest birds farthest from equator. Relative distributions in Argentina of paraguayae and commersoni require further study.

Proposed subspecies schuhmacheri (southern Bolivia) does not appear to be diagnosable; description believed to have been based on worn specimens.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • commersoni Pelzeln, 1868   -  Central and eastern Bolivia (La Paz and Beni south to Tarija and Santa Cruz), south-western Brazil (Mato Grosso) and north-western Argentina (northern Salta, south-eastern Jujuy).
  • paraguayae Cherrie & Reichenberger, 1921   -  Paraguay and northern Argentina (Formosa south to La Rioja, northern Santiago del Estero and northern Santa Fe).
  • albogularis (von Spix, 1824)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Brazil (southern Ceará, Alagoas, Bahia, and Goiás south to Sío Paulo and Rio de Janeiro).
  • rufus (Gmelin, 1788)   -  South-eastern Brazil (Paraná south to Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay and central and eastern Argentina (from southern Santiago del Estero east to Corrientes, south to Neuquén and northern Río Negro).
  • schuhmacheri Laubmann, 1933   -  Northern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz and Beni to Tarija).
