Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and dry forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m, occasionally up to 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Probably most closely related to Lathrotriccus. Some authorities suggest that more than one species may be involved, because of variation in plumage, voice and behaviour (particularly with regard to subspecies duidae and bimaculatus). Conversely, some subspecies possibly unwarranted. Further research is required.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

cabanisi (Leotaud, 1866) - Northern and eastern Colombia, and north-western and northern Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago, Monos I and Chacachacare I.
duidae Zimmer, JT, 1938 - Southern Venezuela and north-western Brazil.
fumosus (von Berlepsch, 1908) - The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil.
fuscatior (Chapman, 1926) - South-western Venezuela, south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and central Brazil.
beniensis Gyldenstolpe, 1941 - Northern Bolivia.
bimaculatus (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Central Bolivia, southern and eastern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
fuscatus (Wied, 1831) - South-eastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina.
