Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Chrysoptilus with the other "forest flickers" Black-necked Woodpecker (Colaptes atricollis) and Spot-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes punctigula). May form a superspecies with Spot-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes punctigula). Partly terrestrial group of southern subspecies inhabiting pampas and Chaco woodland sometimes regarded as forming a separate species comprising the taxa melanolaimus, nigroviridis and leucofrenatus, distinct from the more arboreal nominate subspecies and nattereri. The last two intergrade widely, the others to a lesser extent, and the two groups interbreed along the R Paraná and R Uruguay. Additional named subspecies mariae (Marajó I, north-eastern Brazil), fluvilumbis (Bahia), perplexus (eastern Argentina) and patagonicus (west-central Argentina) are all considered insufficiently differentiated to warrant recognition.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • nattereri (Malherbe, 1845)   -  North-eastern and south-central Brazil south to eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz).
  • melanochloros (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Southern and south-eastern Brazil, south-eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (eastern Formosa, Misiones) and Uruguay.
  • melanolaimus (Malherbe, 1857)   -  Arid upland valleys in central and southern Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Golden-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes melanolaimus).
  • nigroviridis (Grant, CHB, 1911)   -  Southern Bolivia, western Paraguay, northern and eastern Argentina (south to Córdoba and Buenos Aires) and western Uruguay.
  • leucofrenatus Leybold, 1873   -  North-western and west-central Argentina (south to Neuquén, western Río Negro).
