Habitat
Open country, grasslands bordering watercourses, dry spinifex covered ridges.

Population
Estimated population is 2400 (2013) and stable.

Status NT
Grazing and altered fire regimes are thought to be the main threats.

Habits
Singly, in pairs or small flocks in the breeding season. Sometimes form larger flocks, occasionally with several hundred birds.

Food
Seeds of grasses and other plants, as well as cultivated crops.

Voice
A quiet, sibilant, 'si-i-i-it' in contact. Uttered more sharply in alarm.

Nest
Bulky, oval, with a side-entrance, composed of dried grasses and tendrils, interwoven and lined with finer grasses, in a low bush, a tuft of tall grass or among a clump of weeds.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 8; pure white; oval; about 17 x 13 mm. Incubation: about 12 - 13 days; by both sexes.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 21 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Immature with immature Star Finch (Neochmia ruficauda) which has a somewhat more slender bill and lighter under belly and Blue-faced Parrotfinch (Erythrura trichroa) which has a blue face, dark bill and generally an overall green color, with a red tail.
