Subspecies
Forms a group with Sooty Thicket-Fantail (Rhipidura threnothorax) and Black Thicket-Fantail (Rhipidura maculipectus). Subspecies episcopalis intergrades with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
leucothorax Salvadori, 1874 - Western and central New Guinea east to Astrolabe Bay and, in south, to Port Moresby district.
clamosa Diamond, 1967 - Karimui area of Chimbu Province (east-central New Guinea).
episcopalis Ramsay, EP, 1878 - Eastern New Guinea eastern from middle R Sepik and Central Province (Kapa Kapa).
