Habitat
Dense, tangled undergrowth with much debris in wet temperate rainforests, fern gullies.

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Habits
Usually singly or in pairs.

Food
Insects, procured among tree-ferns, fallen logs and on tree-trunks and lower branches, occasionally spiders and snails.

Voice
Piercing whistle, extremely rapidly repeated, sharp 'chi-chi-', followed by louder, clearly whistled 'chiew' or 'chiewit'. Also low, scolding chatter, 'chak-chak-chak'.

Nest
Dome-shaped, composed of grass, moss, bark fragments and fern-down, lined with fur and feathers, placed near the ground among dense foliage or in a perpendicular fork of a tree about 2 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
3 or 4; white, sparingly speckled or finely blotched with red-brown; swollen-oval; about 18 x 14 mm.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous.

Subspecies
Has in the past been placed in genus Sericornis. Recently described subspecies greeniana poorly known, only four specimens. Genus originally combined with feminine adjective, and is thus deemed to be feminine.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • magna (Gould, 1855)   -  Tasmania (except north).
  • greeniana Schodde and Mason, 1999   -  King Island, Bass Strait.
