Subspecies
Affinities of genus unknown. Song and nest pattern indicate relationship with Colibri. Species commonly separated in monotypic genus Schistes, but external morphology and behaviour indicate placement in Augastes. Subspecies albogularis sometimes considered a separate species. However, as zone of introgression in western Ecuador has not yet been studied, this form probably best maintained as subspecies for the present.
Type specimen of proposed subspecies "bolivianus" (Bolivia) does not match existing population of Bolivia, and may be an artefact of nominate and albogularis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
geoffroyi (Bourcier, 1843) - Northern Venezuela through eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador to eastern Peru.
albogularis (Gould, 1851) - Western Colombia (western Andes and western slope of central Andes) to western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Wedge-billed Hummingbird (Schistes albogularis).
chapmani Berlioz, 1941 - Central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
