Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,600 - 3,600 m, occasionally up to 3,750 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Central Andes of Colombia through Ecuador to extreme northern Peru.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Golden Starfrontlet (Coeligena eos), Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena bonapartei), Blue-throated Starfrontlet (Coeligena helianthea) and Bolivian Starfrontlet (Coeligena violifer). "Coeligena traviesi" is most likely a hybrid with Collared Inca (Coeligena torquata).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lutetiae (Delattre & Bourcier, 1846) - Central Andes of Colombia to Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru.
albimaculata Sanchez Oses, 2006 - North-western Ecuador.
