Subspecies
Taxonomy somewhat confused, and precise distributions of subspecies not well known. Probably a sister-species of Blue-throated Hummingbird (Lampornis clemenciae). Subspecies margaritae (including salvini and nobilis) sometimes suggested as possible separate species.

Proposed subspecies brevirostris doubtfully distinct from margaritae. Subspecies circumventris known only from type locality.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • amethystinus Swainson, 1827   -  Western, central and eastern Mexico (southern Nayarit, southern Nuevo León and southern Tamaulipas to Veracruz and eastern Oaxaca).
  • margaritae (Salvin & Godman, 1889)   -  South-western Mexico (Michoacan, Guerrero, western Oaxaca).
  • circumventris (Phillips, 1966)   -  Southern Mexico (San Gabriel Mixtepec, in south-western Oaxaca).
  • salvini (Ridgway, 1908)   -  Highlands of southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala and El Salvador.
  • nobilis Griscom, 1932   -  Highlands of Honduras.
  • circumventus (Phillips, AR, 1966)   -  South-western Oaxaca (southern Mexico).
