Subspecies
Related to Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti), being quite similar in morphology and voice. They are possibly connected also to Green-eared Barbet (Psilopogon faiostrictus).

Proposed subspecies tonkinensis, from northern Vietnam, now considered inseparable from nominate; trangensis from peninsular Thailand (known from only five specimens) and minor from Peninsular Malaysia, both regarded as indistinguishable from ramsayi.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

franklinii (Blyth, 1842) - India east to northern Laos and south-western China.
ramsayi (Walden, 1875) - Central and eastern Myanmar and northern and western Thailand.
trangensis (Riley, 1934) - Peninsular Thailand.
minor (Kloss & Chasen, 1926) - Mountains of Malaysia.
auricularis (Robinson and Kloss, 1919) - Highlands of southern and central Cambodia, central Laos and Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Necklaced Barbet (Psilopogon auricularis).
