Subspecies
Genus probably closely related to Tmetothylacus and Hemimacronyx. May form a superspecies with Fuelleborn's Longclaw (Macronyx fuelleborni). Plumage individually variable, and recognition of subspecies often considered unwarranted.
Proposed subspecies hygricus (Upper Guinea) included in nominate. Subspecies vulturnus sometimes misspelt vulturinus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
croceus (Vieillot, 1816) - Senegambia east to Cameroon, western and southern fringes of Chad, northern and southern Central African Republic, Gabon, north-western and west-central Angola, PRCongo, west, northern and north-eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, and Uganda and mesic areas of western and central Kenya south to Burundi and north-western and northern Tanzania (south to the Serengeti).
tertius Clancey, 1958 - Coastal lowlands of Kenya and Tanzania.
vulturnus Friedmann, 1930 - Central and southern Tanzania, eastern Zambia (east of Luangwa Valley), Malawi, north-eastern and central Zimbabwe and Mozambique south to south-eastern South Africa.
