Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-backed Bulbul (Criniger chloronotus), and often considered conspecific, but exhibits appreciable vocal as well as plumage differences. Subspecies ansorgeanus is morphologically and geographically intermediate between nominate subspecies and Green-backed Bulbul (Criniger chloronotus) and could perhaps be considered a subspecies of Green-backed Bulbul (Criniger chloronotus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
barbatus (Temminck, 1821) - Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to south-western Togo and southern Benin.
