Subspecies
Has in the past been suggested as forming a superspecies with Yellow-necked Greenbul (Chlorocichla falkensteini), but subsequent studies have not supported such a relationship. Poorly differentiated subspecies ortiva (described from southern Mozambique) treated as a synonym of occidentalis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
centralis Reichenow, 1887 - Southern Somalia and south-central and western Kenya south to eastern Tanzania and north-eastern Mozambique.
occidentalis Sharpe, 1882 - North-western Angola east to south-eastern DRCongo and western Tanzania, south to extreme north-western Namibia, northern and eastern Botswana, northern South Africa (south to northern Province and Mpumulanga) and south-central Mozambique.
flaviventris (Smith, 1834) - Coastal southern Mozambique south to eastern South Africa (south to KwaZulu-Natal and extreme northern eastern Cape).
