Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Scaly-throated Honeyguide (Indicator variegatus), marginally overlapping in south-western Sudan and western Uganda. Proposed subspecies feae synonymous with nominate maculatus; theresae with stictithorax. Eastern subspecies often listed as "stictothorax" but original spelling, stictithorax, must stand.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
maculatus Gray, 1847 - Gambia to Nigeria.
stictithorax Reichenow, 1877 - Southern Cameroon east to south-western Sudan, south to northern Angola (Cabinda), southern and eastern Zaire and south-western Uganda.
