South-western Angola (from Benguela) south to central Namibia around Tropic of Capricorn.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been included in genus Chaetopus, or separated in monotypic genus Chapinortyx. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species.
