Subspecies
Formerly treated in genus Euscarthmornis and later in Idioptilon, both now defunct. Possibly a member of the superspecies formed by Buff-breasted Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus mirandae), Cinnamon-breasted Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus cinnamomeipectus) and Kaempfer's Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus kaempferi). Vocal and plumage differences across its range suggest that more than one species may be involved. Subspecies andinus doubtfully distinct from intensus.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • lehmanni (Meyer de Schauensee, 1945)   -  Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia.
  • intensus (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952)   -  North-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá, south-western Táchira).
  • federalis (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1950)   -  Northern Venezuela (Distrito Federal).
  • granadensis (Hartlaub, 1843)   -  Colombia (western and central Andes) and northern Ecuador (western slope in Carchi, eastern slope south to western Napo).
  • andinus (Todd, 1952)   -  Eastern Andes in western Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá, in Táchira) and Colombia (Norte de Santander and Santander).
  • pyrrhops (Cabanis, 1874)   -  South-eastern Ecuador (eastern Loja) and Andes of Peru (Amazonas south to Cuzco).
  • caesius (Carriker, 1932)   -  South-eastern Peru (Puno) and western and west-central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
