Habitat
swamps, salt-water creeks, tidal flats, and lagoons.

Vagrant to Bangladesh (E) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 21,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and conversion, hunting, drought are the main threats.

Habits
Singly, in pairs or small parties.
Food
Fish, crabs and carrion.
Voice
Usually silent. Occasional guttural grunts, usually uttered in threat or display. Also clacking and sharp snapping sounds are made with the bill.

Nest
A large collection of sticks and twigs, upon which a quantity of grass or rushes is laid, in a low tree in a swamp or a tall tree in the forest, and occasionally on the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
2 - 4; white; oval; about 72 x 53 mm. Incubation: by both sexes.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 100 - 115 days.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- asiaticus (Latham, 1790) - India and south-east Asia.
- australis (Shaw, 1800) - Southern New Guinea and northern and north-eastern Australia.
Similar Species
Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) and Great-billed Heron (Ardea sumatrana) when in flight.
