Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 900 m.

Range (Guide)

Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador (E), French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Introduced to Puerto Rico.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

cyanopterus Wiedenfeld, 1995 - South-eastern Mexico to Nicaragua.
macao (Linnaeus, 1758) - Costa Rica, Panama and northern and eastern Colombia (recent record from Nariño), east through Venezuela and the Guianas to central Brazil, and south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and north-eastern Bolivia.
