Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest, high altitude shrubland. From 2,150 - 3,000 m, occasionally up to 3,050 m.
Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Relationships with congeners poorly known.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- viola (Gould, 1853) - Ecuador, Peru.
- pyropus Weller, 2011 - Andes of southern Ecuador and north-western Peru (Piura).
- splendidus Weller, 2011 - Andes of northern Peru (west of Río Marañón in Cajamarca. Also very locally east of Marañón in Amazonas?).
