Subspecies
In past, subspecies fuliginosus was considered a separate species. Subspecies mayri and parkesi differ little from nominate, and might be better synonymized.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
mayri (Valenciennes, 1826) - Northern Luzon.
funebris (Valenciennes, 1826) - Central and southern Luzon, Marinduque and Catanduanes.
parkesi Manuel, 1957 - Polillo Is.
fuliginosus Tweeddale, 1877 - Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Sooty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus fuliginosus).
Similar Species
Larger White-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis) has white belly and moderately long red crest.
