Habitat
Estuaries, sandy shorelines, sandbars, spits, pebbly shorelines.
Canada (E) (B), USA (E) (NB).
Gulf of St Lawrence and coastal Labrador, Canada, wintering from Nova Scotia south to Chesapeake Bay, USA.

Status EX
Extinct. The last confirmed specimen was shot on Long Island, New York, in 1875. Shooting and trapping on its winter quarters and overharvesting of eggs and birds on the breeding grounds probably were major factors.
