Subspecies
Forms a monophyletic group with Black-throated Jay (Cyanolyca pumilo ), Dwarf Jay (Cyanolyca nanus ) and White-throated Jay (Cyanolyca mirabilis ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albior Pitelka, 1951 - Central Costa Rica (Cordillera Central).
argentigula (Lawrence, 1875) - Southern Costa Rica (Cordillera de Talamanca) and western Panama (east to Pico Blanco).
