Habitat
Broadleaved evergreen forest, including primary, secondary and logged formations, peatswamp, heath forest, overgrown plantations. From sea-level - 800 m, being largely restricted to lowlands.
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Singapore (E), Thailand (B).
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction through illegal logging and land conversion, and forest fires are the main threats.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
maculata (Temminck, 1836) - Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Riau Archipelago, Sumatra (including Bangka) and Borneo.
banjakensis Richmond, 1902 - Banyak Is, off north-western Sumatra.
hypopyrrha Oberholser, 1912 - Batu Is, off western Sumatra.
pectoralis Blyth, 1842 - Lowlands of peninsular Thailand and Malaya.
