Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Lineated Woodpecker (Hylatomus lineatus) and Black-bodied Woodpecker (Hylatomus schulzii). Variation is mostly clinal. Proposed subspecies picinus (British Columbia) and floridanus (Florida) considered not to differ significantly from, respectively, abieticola and nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
abieticola (Bangs, 1898) - Southern British Columbia eastern across southern Canada to Nova Scotia, south to north-western and central-eastern California, central Idaho, western Montana, central Saskatchewan, south-eastern Iowa and about Virginia.
pileatus (Linnaeus, 1758) - South-eastern USA, from approximately Illinois east to Virginia and south to south-eastern Texas and Florida.
