Bermuda, Canada (B) (NB) (P), Mexico, Puerto Rico, St Pierre and Miquelon (B) (NB) (P), USA (B).

Vagrant to Bahamas, Denmark, Ireland, Morocco, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom.

Eastern Canada from Manitoba to Newfoundland, south to eastern USA as far southern as North Carolina.
 
Population
Estimated population is 200,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Meller's Duck (Anas melleri) and Yellow-billed Duck (Anas undulata). Sometimes considered a subspecies of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), with which frequently interbreeds.
