Aquatic animals and vegatation.
Males: a distinctive strident rattle during the breeding season. A burping sound in display. Female: soft quacks.
A depresssion in the ground among grass or herbage, lined with grass and down, near water.
8 - 14, usually 8 - 9; smooth, glossy, light brown or cream, often becoming stained; ellipsoidal. Incubation: about 22 days; by male.
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Querquedula.
