Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada (B), Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Pierre and Miquelon (B) (P), St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to France, Gibraltar, Greenland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom.

Breeds across southern Canada (interior south-eastern British Columbia east to southern Ontario, southern Quebec and Nova Scotia, to eastern Newfoundland) southern in USA to Oregon, northern Colorado, Nebraska, central Illinois and Virginia; migrates to non-breeding grounds mostly in eastern Bolivia (Beni and Santa Cruz), south-central Brazil (Pantanal of Mato Grosso), Paraguay, and northern Argentina (R Paraná basin south to Buenos Aires).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Distinctive, and has sometimes been placed in a subfamily of its own (Dolichonychinae). Nesting habits resemble those of Sturnella, but mitochondrial DNA indicates only distant relationship.
