Subspecies
According to molecular data, genus is one of the more ancestral members of the quiscaline group. May form a superspecies with Melodious Blackbird (Dives dives) and previously treated as conspecific. Subspecies intergrade in north-western Peru (Cajamarca and La Libertad).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
warczewiczi (Cabanis, 1861) - Western Ecuador (from southern Esmeraldas and northern Pichincha) south to north-western Peru (Tumbes south to La Libertad).
kalinowskii von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1892 - Coastal plain and foothills of western Peru from La Libertad south, extending inland in Cajamarca (upper R Marañón) and Huancavelica, to Ica.
