Formerly placed in genus Archiplanus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucoramphus (Bonaparte, 1845)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (Táchira) and Colombia (all three cordilleras) south to south-eastern Ecuador (Loja). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Mountain Cacique (Cacicus leucoramphus).
  • peruvianus J. T. Zimmer, 1924   -  Eastern slope of Andes of Peru (Amazonas south to Junín). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mountain Cacique (Cacicus leucoramphus).
