Subspecies
Genus sometimes placed in family Emberizidae. Has hybridized with Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris). Subspecies pulchra and purpurascens considered by some authorities to be too weakly differentiated to be tenable.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
dickeyae van Rossem, 1934 - Breeds southern USA (central and southern Arizona, southern New Mexico) and western Mexico (Sonora and west-central Chihuahua south to Colima).
versicolor (Bonaparte, 1838) - Breeds southern USA (southern New Mexico; southern Texas from Big Bend to Rio Grande Valley) and south through central Mexico to Oaxaca.
pulchra Ridgway, 1887 - Southern Baja California (Mexico).
