Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Passerina. May form a superspecies with Blue Bunting (Cyanocompsa parellina). Wild-bred hybrids with Double-collared Seedeater (Sporophila caerulescens), to which it is not closely related, have been reported in Brazil.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • caucae Chapman, 1912   -  South-western Colombia in valleys of upper R Patí­a, R Cauca and R Dagua.
  • minor Cabanis, 1861   -  Mountains of northern Venezuela (from Falcón and Lara east to Sucre and Monagas).
  • argentina (Sharpe, 1888)   -  Eastern Bolivia (La Paz south to Tarija and Santa Cruz), southern Brazil (western Mato Grosso), Chaco of Paraguay, and northern Argentina (south to La Rioja, San Luis, Córdoba and northern Buenos Aires).
  • brissonii (Lichtenstein, 1823)   -  North-eastern Brazil from Piauí­ and Ceará south to Bahia.
  • sterea Oberholser, 1901   -  Eastern and southern Brazil (from south-eastern Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Espí­rito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones and Corrientes) and Uruguay.
