Subspecies
May hybridize with Golden Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysogaster) in Ecuador.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
meridensis Riley, 1905 - Andes of south-western Venezuela (Mérida).
uropygialis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1871 - Colombia in eastern Andes (Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca).
crissalis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1877 - Andes of south-western Colombia (Nariño) south to central Ecuador.
terminalis Chapman, 1919 - Lower Andes of Peru (Amazonas and Cuzco).
aureoventris (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Southern Peru (Puno), southern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz south to Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to San Luis and Córdoba); also, probably only in austral winter, west-central Brazil (western Mato Grosso) and northern Paraguay.
