Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest and shrubland, subtropical and tropical moist montane forest and high altitude shrubland. From 1,500 - 3,000 m, occasionally 950 - 3,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Vagrant to Trinidad and Tobago.

Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Yellow Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysopeplus) and Black-thighed Grosbeak (Pheucticus tibialis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

laubmanni Hellmayr & Seilern, 1915 - Northern Colombia (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta), Sierra de Perij�, and northern Venezuela (discontinuously in Lara, Aragua, Distrito Federal and Miranda. Also southern Sucre and northern Monagas).
chrysogaster (Lesson, 1832) - Andes from south-western Colombia (Nari�o) to southern Peru (Arequipa and Puno). Also coastal northern and central Peru.
