Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through grazing by feral deer, pigs and goats, predation by rats and cats, disturbance from tourism, are the main threats.
For more information see BirdLife International Species Factsheet.
Voice
A prolonged and buzzy song, rising at the end, and often preceded by a piercing, metallic note. Calls include 'burry' and rough 'djrr', and whistled 'tyew'.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Molecular data support original assertion that this species is part of the group known as "Darwin's finches" (incorporating also Certhidea, Platyspiza, Camarhynchus and Geospiza), the only one not found in Galapagos Archipelago. As such, it is allied to the tanagers (Thraupidae), being closest to Coereba, Tiaris and several Caribbean genera.
