Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland and forest. Also, subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry shrubland, mangroves. From sea-level - 900 m.

Subspecies
Loxigilla noctis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lesser Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla noctis) and Barbados Bullfinch (Loxigilla barbadensis) following AOU (2006).

Genus may belong in tanager family (Thraupidae). Appears to be part of a clade which also includes several other Caribbean genera (Euneornis, Loxipasser, Melopyrrha, Melanospiza), Tiaris grassquits, Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola), and "Darwin's finches" (Certhidea, Platyspiza, Pinaroloxias, Camarhynchus, Geospiza). Formerly considered conspecific with Barbados Bullfinch (Loxigilla barbadensis).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • ridgwayi (Cory, 1892)   -  St John (Virgin Is), St Croix (Usouthern Virgin Is) and northern Lesser Antilles (Anguilla, St Martin, Barbuda and Antigua).
  • coryi (Ridgway, 1898)   -  Saba, St Eustatius, St Christopher (St Kitts), Nevis and Montserrat, in north-western Lesser Antilles.
  • desiradensis Danforth, 1937   -  Désirade, in north-central Lesser Antilles.
  • dominicana (Ridgway, 1898)   -  Guadeloupe, Is des Saintes, Marie Galante and Dominica, in north-central Lesser Antilles.
  • noctis (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Martinique, in south-central Lesser Antilles.
  • sclateri Allen, JA, 1880   -  St Lucia, in south-central Lesser Antilles.
  • crissalis (Ridgway, 1898)   -  St Vincent, in southern Lesser Antilles.
  • grenadensis (Cory, 1892)   -  Grenada, in southern Lesser Antilles.
