Wilkins's Finch (Nesospiza wilkinsi) [XC314483]
by id from Nightingale Island, United Kingdom (call)
Subspecies
Nesospiza acunhae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Inaccessible Finch (Nesospiza acunhae) (Inaccessible Island) and Nightingale Finch (Nesospiza questi) (Nightingale Island), while subspecies dunnei of Wilkins's Finch (Nesospiza wilkinsi) (Inaccessible Island) has been transferred to Inaccessible Finch (Nesospiza acunhae) following Ryan (2008) who provides compelling phylogenetic evidence for this arrangement and points out the morphological and vocal differences supporting the treatment of paraphyletic forms questi and wilkinsi as species.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Inaccessible Finch (Nesospiza acunhae).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
wilkinsi Lowe, 1923 - Nightingale Island in the Tristan da Cunha Group.
dunnei Hagen, 1952 - Coast and eastern interior of Inaccessible I. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Wilkins's Finch (Nesospiza wilkinsi).
