Sometimes considered conspecific with Red-crested Finch (Coryphospingus cucullatus). Hybrids between the two reported in Brazil.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • rostratus Miller, AH, 1947   -  Upper Magdalena Valley, in Colombia.
  • pileatus (Wied, 1821)   -  Central and eastern Brazil from central Mato Grosso east to southern Maranhío and Ceará, south to Goiás, eastern Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
