Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

mesochrysa Salvadori, 1873 - Colombia (at head of Magdalena Valley in Huila; eastern slope of eastern Andes from eastern Cundinamarca and western Meta) south to eastern Ecuador (Napo and Morona-Santiago).
media (Zimmer, JT, 1943) - Northern and central Peru on eastern slope of Andes (Amazonas and Cajamarca) south to Cuzco (R Chanchamayo).
tavarae (Chapman, 1925) - South-eastern Peru (southern from R Tavara) southern on eastern slope of Andes to Bolivia (to Cochabamba and extreme western Santa Cruz).
