Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. Frms a monophyletic species group with Elegant Euphonia (Euphonia elegantissima) and Golden-rumped Euphonia (Euphonia cyanocephala), and all formerly considered conspecific. Widely separated geographically, none differ greatly in voice or behaviour, although males differ somewhat in plumage, females less so.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • musica (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Hispaniola and Goní¢ve I.
  • sclateri (Sclater, PL, 1854)   -  Puerto Rico. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Puerto Rican Euphonia (Euphonia sclateri).
  • flavifrons (Sparrman, 1789)   -  Lesser Antilles on Barbuda, Antigua, Guadeloupe, La Désirade, Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent, and Grenada. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lesser Antillean Euphonia (Euphonia flavifrons).
