Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. Present species forms a monophyletic species group with Golden-rumped Euphonia (Euphonia cyanocephala) and Hispaniolan Euphonia (Euphonia musica), and all formerly considered conspecific. Widely separated geographically, the three do not differ greatly in voice or behaviour, although males differ somewhat in plumage, females less so. Subspecies vincens poorly differentiated, and perhaps better subsumed in nominate.
elegantissima (Bonaparte, 1838) - Western and central Mexico (from southern Sinaloa, Guanajuato and southern Tamaulipas) south, mainly in mountains, to Belize, central and southern Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and central-northern Nicaragua.
vincens Hartert, 1913 - South-western Nicaragua and mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama (east to Veraguas).
