Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry, moist lowland and swamp forest. From sea-level - 2,200 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. Subspecies zopholega doubtfully distinct from nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • crassirostris Sclater, PL, 1857   -  Pacific slope of Costa Rica (from Guanacaste) south to Panama (both slopes from Coclé east through Darién) and northern Colombia (southern on Pacific coast to central Chocó, throughout Cauca Valley and Magdalena Valley. Also in Arauca and Boyacá), and across northern and western Venezuela (east to western Sucre, and southern in llanos almost to R Orinoco).
  • hypoxantha von Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884   -  Pacific coast of Ecuador south to north-western Peru (southern Cajamarca).
  • melanura Sclater, PL, 1851   -  Eastern Colombia (from Meta and Vichada) south through eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru (south to San Martí­n and northern Ucayali), and central Brazil (Acre and generally eastern across Amazon Basin south of R Amazon to western Pará).
  • zopholega (Oberholser, 1918)   -  East-central Peru (Juní­n and Cuzco).
  • laniirostris d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837   -  South-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia east to central Brazil (south-eastern Amazonas and central Mato Grosso).
