Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowlandand dry forest, subtropical and tropical dry and moist shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 900 m, occasionally up to 1,600 m.
Caribbean lowlands from eastern Nicaragua south to north-western Panama (Bocas del Toro, and around Canal Zone) and Pacific slope from north-western Costa Rica (Guanacaste) south to eastern Panama (central Darién).

Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a monophyletic species group with Scrub Euphonia (Euphonia affinis), Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica) and Trinidad Euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis).
