Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a monophyletic species group with Yellow-crowned Euphonia (Euphonia luteicapilla), Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica) and Trinidad Euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
olmecorum Dickerman, 1981 - Ulf slope of Mexico from southern Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosí south to northern Chiapas.
godmani Brewster, 1889 - Pacific slope of Mexico from south-eastern Sonora south to central Guerrero.
affinis (Lesson, 1842) - Yucatán Peninsula and Cozumel I south through Belize and Guatemala to northern Honduras; Pacific slope of Mexico from western Oaxaca southern along coast to north-western Costa Rica (Guanacaste).
