Subspecies
Calyptophilus frugivorus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into Eastern Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus frugivorus) and Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius) following AOU (1998). BirdLife International does not recognise this as a species.

Molecular data suggest that genus does not belong with this family. This species was originally described in genus Phoenicophilus, and subsequently placed in newly erected present genus. Often treated as conspecific with Eastern Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus frugivorus), the enlarged species then consisting of four subspecies, these sharing some characters, which makes clear separation into an eastern species and a western species difficult. Treatment as two distinct species provisional, and further study required.

Proposed subspecies selleanus (described from Massif de la Selle, in Haiti) is considered synonymous with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • abbotti Wetmore, 1929   -  Goní˘ve I (off west-central Hispaniola). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Eastern Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus frugivorus).
  • tertius Wetmore, 1929   -  South-western Haiti (Massif de la Hotte and Massif de la Selle) and adjacent south-western Dominican Republic.
