Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been placed in Coerebidae or Parulidae, but molecular-genetic data indicate that it belongs in present family, with Oreomanes as sister-group. Coastal subspecies littorale, differing from others in plumage, may merit recognition as a separate species. Replaced at higher elevations in Peruvian Andes by nominate, and apparently no intergrades known. Northern subspecies fraseri differs even more from nominate, and may likewise represent a separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • fraseri Sclater, PL, 1859   -  Colombia in southern part of central and eastern Andes (Cauca) south to southern Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ochraceous Conebill (Conirostrum fraseri).
  • littorale von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896   -  Western and north-eastern Peru (western coast and western slope of Andes from Cajamarca, and eastern slope of Andes in upper Marañón Valley) south to northern Chile (Tarapacá).
  • cinereum Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1838   -  Central highlands and tree-line on eastern slope of Andes in Peru (from Huánuco) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and Potosí) and northern Chile.
