Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
auricollis (Deppe, 1830) - Breeds locally from south-western Canada (southern British Columbia and Saskatchewan) south through western USA to central Mexico. Winters mainly in Mexico and Guatemala.
virens (Linnaeus, 1758) - Breeds extreme south-eastern Canada (extreme south-eastern Ontario) and locally eastern USA (from North Dakota and southern Great Lakes south to Texas and northern Florida) and north-eastern Mexico. Winters mainly eastern Mexico south to western Panama.
